The Singapore Short Film Awards (abbreviation: SSFA) is an annual event which promotes and recognises excellence in short films in Singapore. It began in 2010 and is jointly organised by The Substation and Objectifs and presented by The Substation Moving Images. The SSFA is the only platform in that recognises excellence in short films in Singapore. Through the SSFA, organisers hope to showcase the work done annually in the short film genre in Singapore, seek out new talent, reflect standards of the short film genre and to bring together both the veterans and the young talents as a community and create space for networking and sharing. The SSFA programme includes a week-long schedule of film screenings and presents the best Singaporean shorts produced over the last year. Every film submitted, along with award nominees, get a one-time screening at this event. All screenings are free to attend and entry is by donation. Discussions, masterclasses and parties are also held. The SSFA acknowledges not just the filmmakers but also the efforts of key film crew like the cinematographer, actor and art director who are often less recognised for their craft. Each year, an Honorary Award is given to a member of an individual who has made significant contribution to the Singapore film community through his/ her work in short films.
The competition accepts films that have been made within the two years before the competition, but screened publicly only the year before the competition. There is a submission fee of $10.
The SSFA was created by filmmaker Chai Yee Wei, former programmer of The Substation Low Beng Kheng and film curator Yuni Hadi who is also from Objectifs.
